Snowflake Obsidian is volcanic glass that has formed as lava quickly cools. Its snowflake appearance is produced by internal crystallites.

Pure obsidian is usually black in appearance, though the colour can vary. In some stones, the inclusion of small, white, radially clustered crystals of cristobalite in the black glass produce a blotchy or snowflake pattern.
