Jewellery can be a fantastic way to add glamour and sophistication to any look, no matter the event. However, we understand that pairing jewellery with your outfit can sometimes be challenging. Fortunately, we have created the perfect guide of jewellery Dos and Don’ts for you to follow and create a flawless look for your next occasion.

The Dos of Wearing Jewellery

Do: Match the Occasion

Take it from us, different occasions definitely call for different jewellery. For instance, if you have been invited to a work or formal event, your jewellery choice will probably be more simple and elegant than if you were attending a friend’s party. During a casual outing, you can experiment with bigger, more colourful statement pieces.

Here is our brief guide on what jewellery to wear for specific occasions:

  • Work/Business Meetings: We would always recommend stud earrings, delicate bracelets or subtle necklaces.
  • Casual Outings: Make a statement by playing with colourful, bold, and quirky pieces.
  • Formal Events: For a formal event, we love classic pieces like our Mother of Pearl collection.

Do: Consider the Neckline of Your Outfit

The neckline of your outfit plays a significant role in choosing the right necklace, so it’s important to consider your outfit before your jewellery. You can elevate any formal dress with a beautiful necklace, whether it’s an off-the-shoulder, strapless or a V-neck.

Again, here is our simple guide:

  • V-Neck: A pendant necklace that follows the shape of the V looks best.
  • Crew Neck: Shorter necklaces or statement pieces that sit above the neckline work well. Circle pendants work really well with this neckline, and we love our Blue John Tree Of Life Necklace for an added touch of personality to an outfit.
  • Off-the-Shoulder: Chokers or short necklaces draw attention to your exposed shoulders.
  • Scoop Neck: A short pendant or a layered necklace can add a lovely touch.

Do: Mix Metals (Wisely)

This is a controversial one but we love to mix metals. Gone are the days where you had to wear all silver, all gold or all rose gold – you can mix and match these pieces in a chic fashion that works well with your style. Some of the best ways to do this is by layering different pieces. By layering different metals, you can create the perfect sophisticated look, whilst also showing off all your favourite pieces. Or, you can try a more unified look. With a common theme or a similar texture, you can really tie pieces together.

Do: Play with Colours

As vintage jewellery lovers, we are massive fans of colourful pieces – like our Clarice Cliff collection. Jewellery can add a pop of colour to any outfit and bring it in line with your personality. If colourful patterns aren’t your go-to, then why not try out some colourful Gemstones, such as pink rose quartz (which looks amazing in our silver Rose Quartz Necklace) or blue aquamarine can enhance any look – especially if you prefer to wear more neutral shades.

The Don’ts of Wearing Jewellery

Don't: Overdo It

Sometimes, less is more when it comes to jewellery. Whilst we love layering different metals and styles, it’s important not to wear too many statement pieces at once. Otherwise, your look can become too cluttered and overwhelming. We would recommend choosing one area to highlight – such as your ears, neck or wrists. So, either opt for a large pendant, some dangling earrings or a colour bracelet, but we would suggest avoiding all three.

Don't: Forget your Skin’s Undertones

Now for your skin’s undertones – another essential consideration. Your skin tone can really influence not only what metals look the best on you, but also what gemstones will work well. Before buying any statement pieces, look in the mirror and assess what tone your skin has.

Here is our quick go-to guide for how best to pair your jewellery:

  • Warm Tones: Gold, copper, and earthy gemstones like turquoise and coral tend to look best.
  • Cool Tones: Silver, platinum, and jewel-toned stones like sapphire and emerald are flattering.
  • Neutral Tones: Both gold and silver look great, so you can wear any metal you like.

Don't: Clash Patterns and Jewellery

Again, it’s back to your choice in outfit. If your chosen clothes have a busy pattern, we would suggest opting for simpler jewellery. You can go bolder with your jewellery if your outfit is simple and plain. For outfits with a busier pattern, pair it with simple studs (we personally love our Mother of Pearl Starfish Stud Earrings) or a simple bracelet. Whereas for more plain outfits you can experiment with larger, more detailed pieces.

Don't: Neglect Maintenance

Last and definitely not least, jewellery maintenance is definitely a must. Well-maintained jewellery looks better and lasts longer. Clean jewellery goes with every outfit and that's why it’s important to subject your favourite pieces to regular cleaning and proper storage, storing your jewellery in a way that prevents tangling and tarnishing.
