Pyrite Sun Jewellery

Pyrite Sun is a unique formation found only in the Illinois region of the United States. It is also referred to as 'miners' dollars'. It formed around 300 million years ago where the geographical conditions were optimal to produce this disk-shaped mineralised pattern. Pyrite Suns occurred when the weight of sediment above meant it was easier for the pyrite crystals to grow radially rather than vertically – following the path of least resistance.
