• What it is: Baltic amber isn't a mineral. It's resin from conifer forests that grew around 40 million years ago, buried and slowly fossilised into the warm, glowing material we wear today.
• Colour: Rich cognac shading to golden honey. It's the classic amber colour, and it looks especially good against white, blue and navy shirts.
• Inside the stone: Look closely and you'll see flecks and shimmering disc-shaped inclusions called "sun spangles". Every stone's pattern is different, so no two pairs are the same.
• Properties: Amber is soft (2–2.5 on the Mohs scale) and remarkably light. That suits cufflinks well: they won't drag your cuffs down the way heavier gemstone cufflinks can.
