The piece

This is one of the larger pieces in our original citrine range - a 30mm x 20mm teardrop, set into a solid sterling silver frame. Because the setting is open at the back, light travels through the gem rather than stopping at it, which is what gives this pendant its glow: hold it up to a window and the citrine goes from amber to almost translucent gold.

• Most citrine on the market, including much of what's sold as "natural," is actually amethyst or smoky quartz heat-treated to shift its colour — a process that alters the oxidation state of the iron impurities inside the crystal
