Moonstone is characterised by an enchanting play of light. The gemstone owes its name to that mysterious shimmer that changes as light refracts through the stone. Moonstone shimmers in milky translucent whites and blues.
Moonstone is composed of two feldspar species, orthoclase and albite, the two species intermingled. As the newly formed mineral cools, the growth of orthoclase and albite separates into stacked, alternating layers. When light passes between these thin, flat layers it scatters in many directions producing the phenomenon called adularescence.
