Description

A banded pale green Isle of Skye marble pendant, curved, polished and set in a single .925 sterling silver frame. It comes with a free 18" sterling silver chain, and there are four different stones to choose from.

Banded Marble from Torrin

The soft green banding and touches of gold in this stone are natural, coloured by mineral impurities, chiefly serpentine. It comes from Torrin, a village on Loch Slapin on Skye's southern coast, where marble quarrying was recorded as far back as the late 1600s by the travel writer Martin Martin. The original limestone is roughly 500 million years old, far older than the Cuillin mountains nearby.

Collection Information

Skye Marble is predominantly white, grey and black, with some green and yellow tones, and occasional hints of gold, blue and orange making fascinating markings and striations.

Marble from the Isle of Skye is a rare and beautiful type of metamorphic rock. It is primarily composed of limestone that has undergone metamorphism, often incorporating striking veins of white, green or blue hues due to mineral impurities such as serpentine. This gives it a distinctive appearance similar to Italian marble.

It has a number of uses, including as a decorative building material in churches and historic buildings, and in jewellery. It was used to build Armadale Castle in Skye and Iona Abbey, on the nearby island of Iona.

Isle of Skye Marble is not widely quarried today, but some small-scale extraction has taken place over the centuries.
