Mahjong Rectangular Cufflinks | Chinese Game Gift | 24mm in Sterling Silver

Our largest Mahjong cufflinks, made from a pair of Character tiles. The tiles come from a vintage set we bought in Hong Kong, are around 30 years old and made from traditional bone and bamboo. They are set in sterling silver with a T-bar fastening.

About the Character tiles

Each Character tile shows a Chinese numeral above the red character 萬 (wan), meaning ten thousand. In Chinese, nine (九, jiu) sounds like the word for long-lasting, which makes the Character 9 a favourite for weddings and anniversaries.

Mahjong in brief

Mahjong began in China in the 1800s. Four players draw and discard from 144 tiles to complete a winning hand, and the game remains a social ritual in Hong Kong and far beyond.

Mahjong is a game that originated in China and is usually played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols.

There are 3 different groups of suits, numbered from 1 to 9.
There are 2 different sets of Honors tiles: Winds and Dragons. The Winds are East, South, West and North. The Dragons are Red, Green and White.
There are 2 sets of bonus tiles: Flowers and Seasons. The flower and season tiles are unique in the fact that each one has a different artistic rendering of a specific type of flower or season and that each design has only one tile in the whole set making a total of 4 flower tiles and 4 season tiles altogether.
