Colours shaped by heat and time

The gold in tiger's eye comes from iron oxides locked within its fibrous quartz. Gently heat the stone and the iron turns it deep red, sold as red tiger's eye. Where the original blue fibres were never altered, you get a sister stone called hawk's eye.
