Description: Mined in the Blue John and Treak Cliff Caverns of Derbyshire, this mineral has been valued by collectors since the 18th century. Modern extraction is strictly controlled, making authentic Blue John increasingly difficult to source. The oval cut allows light to pass through the stone’s natural crystalline layers, bringing out its rich colour depth. Metaphysically, Blue John is regarded as a stone of peace, helping to clear mental confusion and ground personal energy.

Our Derbyshire Blue John jewellery features this semi-precious mineral which was formed several million years ago.

Blue John is a form of fluorite with bands of a purple-blue or yellowish colour. The name Blue John may come from a corrupted of the French “Bleu jaune” - “blue yellow”.

It is only found in the UK in one location – the Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern in Castleton, Derbyshire.

Blue John is becoming rarer and mining is now extremely limited each year, with only a small amount being made into jewellery.
