Description: The pointed marquise cut creates a generous surface area, giving you an unobstructed view into the natural formation of the stone. Sourced directly from Treak Cliff and Blue John Caverns, this stone is famous for its dark purple and yellow-blue strata. Historically prized by Romans and 18th-century artisans, Blue John remains a rare treasure as global reserves continue to shrink. Metaphysically, it is regarded as a stone of clarity and personal grounding.

Our Derbyshire Blue John jewellery features this semi-precious mineral which was formed several million years ago.

Blue John is a form of fluorite with bands of a purple-blue or yellowish colour. The name Blue John may come from a corrupted of the French “Bleu jaune” - “blue yellow”.

It is only found in the UK in one location – the Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern in Castleton, Derbyshire.

Blue John is becoming rarer and mining is now extremely limited each year, with only a small amount being made into jewellery.
