Description: Hexagonal cuts require expert lapidary work to preserve the structural stability of natural fluorite. Mined from a single valley in Castleton, Blue John is renowned for its unique purple, blue, and yellowish strata formed millions of years ago. Because natural deposits are slowly depleting, owning a cut piece of Derbyshire Spar offers a lasting piece of local mineral heritage. It is also believed to bring focus and mental structure to the wearer.

Our Derbyshire Blue John jewellery features this semi-precious mineral which was formed several million years ago.

Blue John is a form of fluorite with bands of a purple-blue or yellowish colour. The name Blue John may come from a corrupted of the French “Bleu jaune” - “blue yellow”.

It is only found in the UK in one location – the Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern in Castleton, Derbyshire.

Blue John is becoming rarer and mining is now extremely limited each year, with only a small amount being made into jewellery.
