The history of Amethyst

Amethyst has been cherished for centuries, and it remains one of the most recognisable purple gemstones precisely because that colour is unusual in nature.  Most purple minerals are far rarer or far softer than amethyst. 

A variety of quartz which became so prized historically, valued on a level with ruby and sapphire until large Brazilian deposits were discovered in the 1800s.
