A Pear-Cut Amethyst, Rich in Colour

Narrow at the top and rounding out at the base, this 15mm pear-cut amethyst sits in a double bezel frame that gives the silver almost as much presence as the stone. The purple runs deep and saturated,  toward the richer end of what amethyst typically shows, rather than a pale wash of colour.

The Geology

Amethyst is a variety of quartz. Its violet colour comes from trace iron within the crystal structure, altered by natural background radiation as the stone formed underground, which is why no two amethyst stones are ever quite identical, and why the colour can range from soft lilac to near-black violet depending on the source.
