Amethyst forms inside gas cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich fluid crystallises slowly over thousands of years, the biggest deposits, found in Brazil and Uruguay, come out as geodes lined with points rather than solid rock, which is why fine amethyst crystals are hexagonal and often naturally faceted before a jeweller ever touches them.
