The History of Amethyst

Amethyst has been carved and worn since antiquity.  Egyptian and Roman jewellers used it in seals and signet rings, and medieval bishops wore amethyst rings as a symbol of piety, which is part of why it's sometimes still called the "Bishop's Stone."

Chemically it's silicon dioxide (quartz) with trace iron giving it its violet-to-deep-purple colour, and it sits at 7 on the Mohs hardness scale — hard enough for daily wear without excessive care.
