Description

Marble Means "Shining Stone"

The word marble comes from the Greek marmaros, often translated as "shining stone", and Skye marble suits the name: recrystallised calcite and dolomite give the polished surface a soft glow. The limestone is roughly 500 million years old, many times older than the Cuillin mountains, and was turned to marble around 54 million years ago at Torrin. Skye marble was also used in Hamilton Palace and Armadale Castle.

Collection Information

Skye Marble is predominantly white, grey and black, with some green and yellow tones, and occasional hints of gold, blue and orange making fascinating markings and striations.

Marble from the Isle of Skye is a rare and beautiful type of metamorphic rock. It is primarily composed of limestone that has undergone metamorphism, often incorporating striking veins of white, green or blue hues due to mineral impurities such as serpentine. This gives it a distinctive appearance similar to Italian marble.

It has a number of uses, including as a decorative building material in churches and historic buildings, and in jewellery. It was used to build Armadale Castle in Skye and Iona Abbey, on the nearby island of Iona.

Isle of Skye Marble is not widely quarried today, but some small-scale extraction has taken place over the centuries.
