Description

Our unique Slide Rule cufflinks are upcycled from pieces of original slide rules and then set in sterling silver.  Slide rules are historic technological instruments – a perfect gift for mathematicians, engineers, scientists and university graduates.

We have other Scientific cufflinks including computer circuit board and Elgin Watch cufflinks.

Dimensions: 15mm x 15mm

Made from recycled vintage slide rule parts using British Thornton No. P241, the lettering is crisp and detailed, and pristine.

William Oughtred discovered the basic characteristics in 1630, when he placed two logarithmic scales that were invented by his contemporary, Edmund Gunter, alongside each other. Thus the slide rule was born.
We offer this set of cufflinks with the following:

Collection Information

A slide rule is a hand-operated mechanical calculator consisting of slidable rulers for evaluating mathematical operations such as multiplication, division, exponents, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry. It is one of the simplest analogue computers.

To use a slide rule to multiply 2 numbers together, move the decimal points for each number you are multiplying so they fall between the values of 1 and 10. Next, find the smaller number on the D scale and slide the C scale so the "1" on the far left lines up with the smaller number.

Slide rules are now mainly found in museums and collections, as their practical use has been replaced by modern electronic calculators and computer software.
